Last fall, half of the respondents to a DWConline Poll question reported that motorization was “very important,” or “growing in interest” among their customers (see D&WC, September 2008, page 12). In December 2008, we asked visitors to gaze into the future to see what product category they think will be the sales leader in 2009. Surprise! It turns out to be motorization.
• 28 percent of respondents said motorization will be the sales-leading product category in 2009—more than either “Shades” and ”Draperies” combined.
• Only 16 percent of respondents said draperies will top sales.
• In the upper left of the chart, the four gray shaded slices represent: Horizontal blinds, Specialty shades, Top treatments and Vertical blinds—each receiving four percent of the responses.
One comment posted on the poll might suggest a shift in who will be the most important customers in 2009. “Men need a remote in their hands!” it read.
In support of draperies, another commenter responded, “(I) predicted a while back that it wouldn’t be long before all we were doing would be panels. It has come to pass.”
