Regular visitors to the Draperies & Window Coverings Web site, www.DWConline.com, will notice some changes. Among them, a monthly poll on topics of interest to the industry. Each month, a new multiple-choice question will be posted and remain active for a month. We’ll then take a look at the responses and report back here in the magazine’s Take Note section.
Our first question was: “What is your TOP selling Product Category?” with nine possible responses from fabric treatments to shutters. As it turns out: soft treatments rule! At least, 51 percent of our poll respondents report their top selling products are either “draperies/fabric treatments” or “top treatments.” The breakout of responses is illustrated in our chart.
There are a couple of interesting points to make from the responses. First, it’s difficult to categorize some products—aren’t sheers a fabric treatment? Aren’t woven woods shades? What about shadings, which combine features of both vertical blinds and sheers? The idea, however, was to break these out to really get at which specific products are the top sellers.
Second, don’t count out shutters! A healthy percentage of our respondents report shutters are top sellers and, if the margins are there, that means big dollars.
Third, vertical blinds, as such, have fallen from past dominance. We probably knew that without seeing it so starkly illustrated. Perhaps they are being replaced by sliding panel systems and sunscreens—two product categories that are seeing growing interest.
It will be informative to learn where this industry stands on these issues. Keep checking our Web site to participate in our polls, learn the results and add to the sharing of knowledge.
