CHALLENGE: I am involved in a remodel that includes a bathroom with a stone shower. There are windows above the shower and I need a functional, yet appealing window treatment. I would also like to find a shade that will pull down from the top and also pull up from the bottom. What do you suggest, and can you recommend a company that sells a window treatment such as this if it is available?
SOLUTION:Your bathroom remodel sounds wonderful! Because of the location of the windows and specifications you have asked about, here are two great solutions:
First, if the window location above the shower will be affected by splashing water, I definitely would suggest a treatment that is waterproof. Many products fit the bill, from roller shades to vinyl shutters or blinds. I will provide you with a few sources so you can check out the specifications on each product.
Pella windows offer an option from its Designer Series®. The new window and frame offers an inside shade that is mounted between the panes of glass. The frame even can be opened so that the client can change the pleated shade or micro-blind inside to chose a color to match the new interior. This solution requires changing out the entire window. At www.pella.com you will be able to view a video on the Designer Series.
As a second option, there are shades that will offer you privacy and control, known as top-down/bottom-up shades. This option is available from various companies such as Graber, Levolor and Hunter Douglas. Be sure to flip through the suppliers that are advertising in this current issue of D&WC magazine. This option is usually an upgrade from the original blind or shade, but is worth it. You also may want to check out a remote control option for the window treatment based on the location above the shower.
