A month or so ago I had the opportunity to sit down and review 29 entries in our first D&WC Designer & Workroom Contest. And what fun that was! I wasn’t alone, either. Two of our contributing writers also were judges. On the workroom side, Mary Ann Plumlee took a look at each entry; and on the design side, Karla Nielson did the same.
I think I can speak for all of us when I say what a treat it was going through the submitted entries. I have the privilege of e-mailing, talking and meeting regularly with our readers and know the passion and fun they bring to the window coverings industry through their work. It was just so nice to concentrate on this creative side of the business for a while.
There were so many great entries we decided to choose four winners! Our cover this month features Grand Prize winners Judy Ciaciura and Stacey Gardner! You can read about them and their winning design beginning on page 32.
But we couldn’t just stop there. Check out Spotlight on pages 36 through 41. We awarded two Finalists in specific areas: Designer Bonnie Haugh and workroom Peggy Morgans, both of Pittsford, NY, were honored for the best workmanship and execution of design; while Steve Albertson and Warren Steven Window Fashions Drapery Workroom in Minnesota showed outstanding efforts in integrating technology and motorization into a winning design.
Last, but not least, the team of designer Melissa Rodgers and workroom Deborah Hather was presented Honorable Mention acknowledging their beautiful treatments.
The official announcement of this year’s winners was made at the Friday night D&WC Networking Dinner at the Southern Design & Workroom Conference in Knoxville, TN. We also unveiled displays of all the winning projects. Not only are we planning to make our Designer & Workroom Contest an annual event, but we’re also going to make the announcement of winners at our networking dinners a yearly happening, too!
We’d like to sincerely thank all of those who entered and made this our first-ever contest such a success. We want to encourage everyone to keep up the great work—many of the contest entries not awarded this year will be taking the Spotlight in upcoming issues of Draperies & Window Coverings throughout the year.
Be sure to watch for the announcement of our second annual contest. Next year, it could be you on the cover of D&WC!
