Friends, As the newly elected president of the Window Covering Safety Council, it seems fitting that my first letter to the industry is for the annual safety supplement of Draperies & Window Coverings. Over the past five years, virtually every major advance in the window coverings industry has been shaped by our all-encompassing commitment to product safety. This commitment has been the driving force behind the scores of exceptional technological innovations and engineering improvements defining today's window coverings. From cordless products to remote-control operating systems, the marketplace is now filled with exciting new products offering both cutting-edge technology and new-age styling. In what seems like the blink of an eye, engineering advances have overtaken fashion to become the hallmark of this industry. Customers no longer look to us for something merely decorative. Instead, they now seek products that combine the best in quality, style, design and value with the latest safety features. A quick look through the pages of this supplement gives testimony to industry's success in meeting this challenge. It is important to remember that our industry's commitment to product safety goes beyond today's product or tomorrow's prototype. Through the Window Covering Safety Council, we remain committed to educating all Americans to the importance of window-cord safety, and to providing free safety kits for retrofitting older window coverings. Together these actions have established the window coverings industry as one of the country's leading proponents of consumer product safety.
