This is the time of year to think of trimmings and accessories—from trimming the Christmas tree to decorating for the holidays, it’s those myriad little touches that take a room from great to spectacular.

This month we review what some of our noted design professionals have to say on the subject from pillows to decorative hardware. Happy holidays!

The Icing on the Cake
With the right finishing touches, a good room design can be brought to mouthwatering perfection. Interior design is a lot like baking a cake—what would it be without the icing?

Design instructor Karla Nielson reminds us that while covering a window, putting up sheet rock and painting it plain white or installing a wood floor is, unto itself, a good, solid solution, none of these design ideas are as wonderful as they can be without the right finishing touches: the perfect valance, great wall coverings with just the right texture or paint color, or an exotic Oriental rug

The Inside Scoop on Pillows
Pillows are booming, writes Cheryl Strickland. More people have more pillows in their homes than ever before. Decorators love pillows. With a nice throw pillow you can draw in colors from the other side of the room, make a drab sofa eye-catching, continue schemes and patterns throughout an entire house and keep workrooms busy. But when it comes to pillows, it’s what’s inside that really counts.

Decorating Details Make Homes Homey
From found objects to pricey antiques, clients often fall in love with accessories, says Dawn Kearney. Many homeowners understand it's the finishing touches that make a house homey. Interior designers scour the world in search of those special decorative flourishes. They're limitless and can range from inexpensive lace pillow edging to a very expensive Philadelphia tripod tea table with hairy paw feet built in 1770.

Hand-in-Hand
Let’s not forget decorative hardware, says Mari Lyn Bushnell. In home décor, trends have begun to mirror apparel fashion to the point where the lines between home and fashion have crossed: it's not about how we look or how our homes are decorated, but how we live. And because living style is a very personal choice, consumers are empowered to select home décor products that fit their unique styles.
