Happy Holidays

All across America families gather this time of year—from late November through early January—for what is collectively called The Holidays. It’s an amazing time of year. It begins by celebrating the abundance of a year rapidly drawing to a close and ends with resolutions to make the new year an even better one. We honor our heritage and anticipate our future.

Many of us in business take much-deserved time off during the holidays. The incredible run up to this year-ending season is exhilarating, frustrating, maddening and joyous. Finally there comes a time to pause, to close up shop and to be with loved ones before it all begins again.

One thing you almost always can count on this time of year is for people across the country and around the world to set aside their differences—be it for ever so briefly—to join together in wishing and hoping the best for us all. The window coverings industry is no different. Like most families it can be a fractious, cantankerous lot, but that’s part of what makes it so wonderful. There are bold leaders, faithful followers, rabid independents, far-sighted entrepreneurs, risk-takers, hardliners, softies—you name it. This industry is rarely dull, but that means getting it to agree on anything is difficult.

Except in one area: safety. For reasons as many and diverse as the industry itself, it is united in this. No one wants to produce, design, sell or install a product that can be harmful to our customers. The price paid is too great otherwise.

Over the past several years in our December issue, D&WC has focused attention on the industry’s efforts to make the safest products possible (see page 47). Led by such organizations as the Window Covering Safety Council, this disparate industry is unified when it comes to developing new products that meet consumers’ demands and protects their safety. And the best part about these efforts is that they are done voluntarily.

Perhaps there is no better time of year than now, The Holidays, to put aside our differences and celebrate this noble cause.

All of us at Draperies & Window Coverings would like to wish our readers, partners, advertisers the happiest of holidays.
