Think Large, Think Toile
Decorating Den Interiors Dream Room Contest brings its top
designers, trends to the forefront.
by Kathleen Stoehr
In March, magazine
editors and writers from around the United States were invited to
judge the 2002 International Dream Room contest, sponsored by Decorating
Den Interiors, Montgomery Village, MD, to celebrate the fine achievements
its cadre of interior designers had over the past 12 months. This
years entries not only spotlight the work of some top designers
from around the country, but also highlight some design trends worth
noting.
Held at the Doral Park Avenue Hotel in midtown Manhattan, the contest
was a well-organized and professional tribute to its entrants, who
offered before-and-after photographs of their rooms and short essays
on the design challenges they faced. Addition-ally, memos of wall
coverings, fabrics, paint and more were available in storyboard
format, along with the total cost of the project.
The goal of this gathering was simple: to choose the top three DDI
entries in each category (categories being every room in a residential
home, as well as separate commercial and model home categories),
based on how effectively the design challenge was fulfilled for
the client. From those top entries, Decorating Dens Decorator
of the Year was selected in a final Internet vote by the same set
of judges, about three days after the initial votes were tabulated.
Selected as this years Decorator of the Year was Bonnie Pressley.
The accompanying photographs are indicative of some of the unique
design ideas I saw. As I left the event, I had no idea who would
be chosen winner in each category, but I wanted these photos anyway.
After receiving a list of the winners, I went through my list of
requested photos and isolated the winners.
Here are some of what I consider the best of the Decorating Den
Interiors Dream Room Contest 2002. To preview more room makeovers,
