A Unique Environment
David Landy Interiors
by Kathleen Stoehr
Since 1978, David Landy, ASID, David Landy Interiors, Long Island,
NY, has been creating enduring interiors, “wherever there
is a challenge, wherever there is strong desire by the client for
timeless and value-oriented design.” Landy, who received
the ASID Citation of Excellence award in September 2000, has been
a jewel in the ASID crown, a noted guest speaker on the topic of—what
else?—interior design for such notable companies as Barnes & Noble,
and is currently serving on the New York Metro Board of ASID.
It’s a busy life for this talented designer, but always one with an eye
to setting himself apart from his competition. “There is a very fine line
that exists between design that is gimmicky and that which is cutting edge and
timeless. We draw that line every day,” says Landy. A quick browse through
his mini-portfolio on his Web site (www.akropo lis.net/members/dlinteriors) will
show how his work does not seem to age.
‘There is a very fine line that exists between
design that is gimmicky and that which is cutting edge and timeless.
We draw
that line every day.’
In fact, try to find the design that
is 19 years old, or the room he designed 15 years ago. It’s hard to do. “This
is a testament to ageless design, and the firm feels it represents the best value
for our clientele—timeless design and lasting quality.”
FROM TANKS TO THANKS
In his quest for creativity, all while keeping an eye on today’s economy,
Landy hit on a marvelous idea for a client’s dining room that fit this
philosophy to a tee.
You would never know it, but the material covering the windows in the accompanying
photo is made out of the same camouflage material that was used to cover tanks
during Desert Storm in Iraq. There are even small bits of radar-deflecting
metal snapped onto the mesh. Exceptional cleaning and prepping methods made
this previously
unusable material now deliciously functional. Best, these uniquely draped treatments
were cut and installed in about two hours.
Offering a cozy, warm statement, the neutral and yet variegated color in these
drapes casts illuminated shadows into the room when the sun filters through
the wood blinds.
On the walls, craft paper-backed wallpaper with magnolia branches extend out
in a large scale pattern, a pattern that would take over the room if it were
not for the leaf textures of the drapery. Huge plant pots bursting with dried
florals and leather-backed dining chairs finish this intimate environment.
Sensuous and warm, the design is exactly what the client hoped to have accomplished. “P.S.,” Landy
winked, “I cannot be responsible for any affairs that take place in
this room!”
