Reading Is Fundamental

by Howard Shingle,

The window coverings and interior fashions industry has been around long enough to have produced a host of experts in every aspect of the field. Most of these experts are willing to share their knowledge to help you avoid mistakes and run a more successful retail, design or workroom business. Where can this knowledge be found? In books—and in magazines, on audio tapes, videotapes and on-line. Where can these materials be found? We're glad you asked!

To begin, start with this month's Workroom Operations column. Kitty Stein provides an extensive list of books and tapes that she has personally used and recommends. Her selection runs the gamut from marketing and selling to pricing, handling employees, window treatment fabrication and textiles.

Want more? No problem. Go on-line and visit www.DWCdesigNET.com. Click on Interior Fashions University and go to the Bookstore. There you will find another selection of show-how, tell-how guidebooks, decorating manuals, custom videos, ready-to-use advertisements, worksheets and order forms—most by current or former D&WC columnists and all by experienced industry achievers and authorities. Any of these materials can be ordered on-line directly from D&WC or by calling (800) 833-9056.

Want still more? Great! D&WC introduces a new opportunity beginning this month. While on the Bookstore page, click on the Amazon.com logo. You will be taken to yet another growing selection of books and tapes specially selected by D&WC magazine complete with brief reviews—all available to order directly from Amazon.com. In the weeks and months ahead, we'll continue adding more books and materials to this list so keep checking back.

"Reading is fundamental," was a popular education slogan for many of us while growing up. The idea was to get more school children excited about reading and the lifelong benefits it provides. It was a good idea then, and it is a good idea today.
