Architectural Elements of Elegance

Created and Written by Barbara J. August

Whether it is a window, wall or some other structural feature, each interior has a unique point of interest built into its basic form. The following pages demonstrate innovative design ideas for rooms with unusual architectural elements to create a special elegance in both formal and informal settings.
This sunburst, made with döfix iron-on smocking tape, was created with extraordinary uniform pleats. Tensionless banding is attached with döfix hemming tape, while matching rosettes add the finishing touch.

Country Woods Collection[TM] wood blinds from Hunter Douglas, comprised of Country Woods Classics[TM] and the premium Country Woods Artisan Series[TM], are available in specialty shapes to cover almost any window. Featured here on an arched window and companion window, Country Woods Classics[TM] add style and comfort to this bedroom.

This cathedral ceiling and angled window wall is richly fitted with custom plantation shutters from Heirloom Window Furshings. Features include astragal molding between panles, full mortice and tenon contruction, high-tech acriylic resin paint, Deco-Framing, Magic Tilt control and concealed hinges.

This curved glass turret room is outfitted with 2 1/2-inch vertical LouverMover[TM] custom shutters from Lafayette Venetian Blind. With more than 50 finishes and five louver widths in both horizontal or vertical orientation, these shutters are suited to any window setting.

This Palladian window draws your eye up the dramatic staircase in this Georgian-inspired interior. Vista window film offers a protection from the sun's harmful ultraviolet rays, without taking away from this elegant architectural element.

Roman Shades still work for angled windows as shown here with this insulated shade made with Warm Window[TM] lining to keep the room comfortable year-round. The lining reduces heat loss in winter and heat gain in summer. When the shade is drawn closed, it darkens the room and deadens outside sounds to create a secluded, peaceful environment.
