Tropical Expressions

Graphic design by Tonya Weiland

Island dreams turn into design realities with window treatments and interior fashions that have a tropical flair. Help your cold-weather customers beat the winter doldrums, or enhance the warm-weather ambiance of customers in sunny climates, with these breathtaking room settings that hint at a magical island escape.

Sun and surf are great for playing, but can be especially hard on ordinary wood blinds. These Woodwinds® wood alloy blinds from Comfortex are made of a combination of basswood and advanced engineered materials to beat the effects of sun, heat and moisture. Because they won't chip, crack, fade or warp, Woodwinds are ideal for bathrooms, kitchens and other high-humidity environments.

Silhouette® window shadings from Hunter Douglas Window Fashions are featured in this Mediterranean-style bedroom. With their soft adjustable fabric vanes suspended between sheer front and back facings, Silhouette shadings offer the light control of a blind, the easy operation of a shade and the soft, airy look of a sheer-an ideal combination for the light and airy ambiance of a tropical setting. For tropical decors that require a touch of elegance, döfix offers these sheer flower shades and woodless cornice. Flower shades are fabricated using döfix Rollofix RF transparent; optional wrap-around banding was applied using döfix Bortenfix 3/8-inch for a stitchless and pucker-free finish. The woodless cornice, as well as the three-dimensional appliqués, are made out of döfix 2002 double-sided iron-on fabric stiffener. Tiebacks using döfix iron-on tieback interfacing complete the lush look.

The promise of soft, warm evening breezes are created in this bedroom setting with the use of Kirsch window hardware. Soft valances and swags gently placed over brass shell finials and rods from the Studio Coordinates® collection add the graceful feeling of the tropics to the setting. The use of vertical blinds completes the image combining softness and a protection from outdoor heat. Kirsch
