Harris Scholarship Winners Named
S. Harris & Co., Tulsa, OK, and the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) Educational Foundation have announced the 1998 winners of the Steven Harris Memorial Scholarship Award. Presented annually in the amount of $1,500, the program is designed to benefit talented, undergraduate interior design students and to encourage their professional development in the textile industry. The recipients of the 1998 scholarships were Lorie Follette, Washington State University, and Aimee Wertepny, Harrington Institute. The awards were presented at the ASID conference held in New York, NY, last October.
In Memoriam: Phifer Wire Products Founder J. Reese Phifer, chairman of the board of Phifer Wire Products, Inc., Tuscaloosa, AL, died October 25, 1998. He was 82. An entrepreneur, World War II pilot, well respected businessman, humanitarian and attorney, Phifer achieved numerous accomplishments during his lifetime. He founded Phifer Aluminum Screen Co. in Tuscaloosa in 1952 and built it into a leading manufacturer of aluminum and fiberglass insect screening supplying all 50 states and more than 100 countries. Its products also include sun control window covering products and designed fabrics for outdoor leisure furniture. Phifer received a number of awards and honors including the first Human Rights Award given by the local NAACP, the Tutwiler Award exemplifying high personal and professional standards, an Honorary Doctor of Humanities degree from the University of Alabama, and was inducted into the Alabama Business Hall of Fame in 1991. Under his leadership the company received the prestigious Presidential E and E Star awards for excellence in export sales and the Presidential C Award recognizing the company's involvement in such areas as education, drug abuse, job training and assistance to the handicapped. Noska's Patent Garners Recognition Carl H. Noska of LouverLooks, Inc., Dallas, TX, has been selected for inclusion in the 1998-99 edition of Who's Who in American Inventors. Noska's selection was based on his patented Highlite®, an operable louvered half-circle window covering made of two fan-shaped portions with identical, decorative cut out slots. The rear portion pivots at the center to open or close the louvered slots. Who's Who in American Inventors profiles successful inventors in the United States whose inventions have made a positive impact in society. Fewer than 10 percent of all patent holders are selected each year for the honorary membership. Brewster Adds Two Sales Reps Brewster Wallcovering Co., Randolph, MA, has added two new sales representatives to its Southern sales team. Donna Gooch will service retail customers in central and western Tennessee. Gooch brings more than 13 years of experience to her new post. She has spent the last eight years as a designer and owner of an interior design business. She also has prior experience as a sales representative for a major airline. Jimmy D. Staus will service retail customers in eastern Tennessee, western North Carolina, western South Carolina and northeast Georgia. He brings more than five years experience in direct outside sales and marketing to his new position. For the last several years he has been a territory manager for a major paint company. Fuentes Joins IPS Window Fashions IPS Window Fashions, Miami, FL, has appointed Richard Fuentes vice president of sales. His responsibilities will include developing new marketing programs and overseeing the expansion of the company's national sales staff. He will be instrumental in the creation of a new sampling program. Fuentes brings with him more than 10 years of industry experience and more than 30 years in management experience. Forman Joins Dixon Donna Forman, Allied ASID, has joined John Dixon, Inc., Cleveland, OH, as sales representative. Forman graduated summa cum laude with an Associates Degree in applied business, majoring in interior design. She has many years of experience including managing a fabric store specializing in custom window treatments. Yablon Heads Design/Craft Marketing Design/Craft Fabric Corp. has appointed Bert E. Yablon as marketing director for its U.S. base of operations in Niles, IL. Among his responsibilities will be to oversee advertising, sales support, product development, merchandising and trade show events. Yablon brings 18-years in marketing to his new post. Seabrook Hires Corporate Specialist, Account Execs Seabrook Wallcoverings, Inc., Memphis, TN, has hired Joseph W. Bender as corporate contract specialist. His new role is to offer training and sales support to the company's national sales team. Following 24 years of experience as a contract sales manager, field representative and sales manager in the wall coverings industry, Bender will cover the territory from Cincinnati, OH, to California. Seabrook also announces the addition of three account executives. Debbi Arslanian-Polen is the new account executive for Cleveland, OH, and the surrounding area. She has more than 13 years of experience in commercial interior design and contract sales. Following several years of experience in sales and commercial contracts, Steve Watson joins the company covering northern California, southern Oregon and northern Nevada. Julie A. Zimmerman will serve contract customers in Chicago, IL, and the surrounding area. She has experience in both sales and interior design. Robert Allen Group Appoints Buckners The Robert Allen Group, New York, NY, has appointed Graham Buckner and Linda Buckner sales representatives in the greater Texas territory. Together, they will be responsible for sales in the Beacon Hill, Robert Allen and Ametex divisions. Linda Buckner has more than 16 years of sales experience in the home furnishings industry. Her sales territory for the Robert Allen and Beacon Hill brands will be the greater Dallas and Ft. Worth areas. Most recently she was with Covington Industries. Graham Buckner has more than 28 years in the home furnishings industry. His sales territory for the Ametex brand will include Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Colorado. Most recently he was Western Sales Manager for Covington Industries. Julian Presented CMG Excellence Award Color Marketing Group, CMG, Alexandria, VA, has presented its Dr. Forrest L. Dimmick Award for Excellence in Color Marketing to Alexander Julian of Alexander Julian, Inc., Ridgefield, CT. The award was conferred by Melanie Wood, CMG president, during CMG's Fall International Confer-ence in October 1998. Julian was chosen due to his pioneering use of color in the male fashion market as well as his successful bridge into home fashions where he has brought style and color to nearly every price point, CMG says. The award is the highest honor bestowed by CMG and has been presented only 10 times since its inception in 1969. The award is named after Dr. Forrest L. Dimmick, an early member of CMG who was professor of psychology at Hobart College, Geneva, NY, from 1925 to 1947. He later headed the Vision Bureau at the U.S. Navy Research Laboratory in New London, CT. |
