As I sit down to write this column my two little girls are tucked under their Barbie covers nestled quietly in their beds. Sound asleep they are safe from the hustle and bustle of daily life. When the sun comes up, our busy day begins. We get dressed, eat breakfast and it's off to camp or school. I'll never forget the first day of camp, it was the first time both of our girls went on the same school bus. We were so excited and worried my husband followed the bus until both children were safely at their destination. I wished I could go with them all day to protect them, but that is neither realistic nor practical. This is where our journey ends and theirs begins. Camp consists of hiking, boating, swimming twice daily, games, arts and sports. To me, this next part is the most difficult part of being a parent. We have to rely on the camp counselors to make sure the sports equipment is safe, the lifeguards watch the children in the pool closely, the hiking trails are free of poison ivy and the peddle boats do not have holes. And after a full day at camp I am amazed the children still muster up enough energy to run around the house and play. At home, I feel more comfortable watching our daughters . . . or not. My husband and I have done our part in making our home a safe and comfortable place. Because of the importance to us of our children's safety we have taken measures to ensure our tables have rounded corners, there are no toys on the stairs and our window coverings are childproof. There is not a lot we can do to protect our children outside of the home, but we certainly can do our best to ensure they are safe inside the home. In this issue, Draperies & Windows Coverings' has partnered with the Window Covering Safety Council (WCSC) to produce a 24-page safety supplement. This special section will introduce you to the safest window covering products and components that are available on the market and to the corporate sponsors who share in WCSC's mission. Kudos to those companies that have stepped forward and recognized the importance of providing parents and caregivers with products that will ensure our children's safety.
