The Results Are In

What's hot in shutters for 2000? For a start, try something that is new and different, perhaps a new finish, or recommend shutters for the bathroom . . . vinyl, of course. Last April we questioned our readers on "What Is Hot in Shutters?" As the responses poured in over the fax machine and through the mailbox, we realized we were on to something. Here we are sitting on a captive audience of 28,000 window coverings professionals willing to divulge their "selling secrets" to help us learn more about the shutter market. Our overwhelming response gave us a strong sampling and the basis for our survey results.

We shouldn't have to tell you that shutters have been a growing product category for some time now. In fact, to show just how much the category has developed we went back into our archives to compare the results of this survey to an identical one that ran in 1992. If you are not currently selling shutters, once you see the profits involved, according to our survey responses, you may rethink that decision.

The numbers represented by the results are not just guesses—84 percent of the survey respondents have been in the industry for more than 10 years. These experienced professionals go on to tell us why consumers purchase shutters, the most popular types of finishes and the exploding growth found in vinyl shutters. We are confident these results can be translated into the horizontal wood category as well. Our shutter survey results begin on page 40 and are followed by a product showcase displaying wood and faux wood blinds and shutters.

We shudder to think what might happen to your business should you ignore this informative survey. Thanks to all who participated, we look forward to delivering more up-to-date "Hot Product Categories" in the months ahead.
