WINDOW COVERINGS UNIVERSE
How does your store stack up against national averages?
If you operated a window treatments store in 2002 and had sales of about $600,000 that year, you might have thought you did pretty well. As it turns out, you did about average.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau’s American FactFinder survey for 2002, the latest year available, there were 2,163 window treatments stores in the United States, defined as establishments primarily engaged in retailing new window treatments, such as curtains, draperies, blinds and shades. But only 1,753 operated for the entire year, generating a total of $1.05 billion in sales.
The largest group of stores (910) had individual sales between $250,000 and $999,999. By contrast, 570 reported sales under $249,999 and 273 reported sales of $1 million or more.
What the survey does not reveal are sales recorded at department or chain stores that are not “primarily engaged” in retailing window treatments or the amount of window treatments sold through home-based businesses selling strictly shop-at-home.
