Take Your Time and Hurry Up
As I write this editorial, August is on the horizon and so school begins and summer ends. Each year, as soon as they get out of school the kids begin counting the days: days until camp, days left in summer vacation and finally how many more days until school begins again.
My daughter is counting the days until her 13th birthday, her bat mitzvah is right around the corner. I already have relatives asking me how long the service will be. My husband is concerned, too. Will the service be over in time for the party we scheduled?
Why are we always living for the future and not for the present?
In our lives, good means fast and better means even faster.
Everywhere we look around us there is a premium on speed.
Whether it is how fast your food is delivered to the drive-through or to the table, or if your plane leaves on time, we are always in an amazing race. For what? We all wear watches, stare at clocks and turn to our day planners to make sure we are on time for our scheduled appointments. We have been taught that time is money, it can be bought and sold, but is never to be wasted. Have you ever just stopped to look at a beautiful painting or stare up at the moon and stars?
It is my hope that each of us might try living by the light of the moon, starting today. Go for a walk without a destination, just to look and to listen and to feel alive. Spend a little more time with your loved ones or just read a book. You may even find yourself listening more to what customers have to say instead of rushing off to your next appointment. Try to take one day a week and don’t set yourself a schedule.
Enjoy the present, as it is a gift.
