IN MEMORIAM: GARY SMALL
Gary L. Small, Monique’s Draperies, died January 22, 2006,
at Stanford Hospital, Palo Alto, CA. He was 56.
Born in Pasco, WA, Small enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard following
high school and there received extensive training in electronics,
which had been his special interest since childhood. He settled
in the San Jose/Los Gatos area where he enjoyed a successful career
in the electronics industry. When it became necessary for him to
retire at an early age because of serious health problems, he was
able to assist his wife, Caroline, by developing unique computer
programs specific to her drapery and window covering business, Monique
Draperies (see D&WC, December 2002, page 24).
Although Small considered computers a hobby, he created one of the
best computer programs available for the store and felt that their
technology was, and is, a strong force in moving them ahead of the
competition. Small felt the window coverings industry was behind
the times in this area and had hoped the D&WC cover story would
encourage those involved in the industry to move forward in technology.
