CALHOOK HOSTS SMALL RETAILER BUSINESS CONFERENCE

Calhook-TMS, Kent, WA, was host to a free conference for independent retailers and regional chains focusing on survival skills for small businesses. The TMS Retail Conference and Expo was scheduled for May 18 and 19 at the Convention and Trade Center, Tacoma, WA.

Scheduled for the conference were leading independent retail experts including Barry Shamis, Debbie Allen, Paul Hartunian and Corey Rudl. Sessions covered new information on employee recruitment and retention, customer motivation and purchasing habits, guerilla public relations and the online gold mine. A keynote address, “Outrageous Advertising That Is Outrageously Effective,” was presented by Bill Glazer, a nationally known retail marketing expert and a 30-year veteran of the independent retailing industry.

More than 40 national suppliers of store fixtures, displays, packaging, security and price marking systems were scheduled to exhibit.

Thompson Merchandising & Supply (TMS) has owned Calhook since 1997 (see D&WC, September 1997, page 10), and is one of the country’s leading retail store distributors with 35 years experience and more then 25,000 customers nationwide.

DURALEE ADDS VINTAGE CYRUS CLARK DESIGNS

Duralee® Fabrics, Ltd., Bay Shore, NY, has been given the rights to shop the archives of the now extinct Cyrus Clark Co. and has reintroduced some of the company’s classic designs. Duralee’s top designers have taken some of Cyrus Clark’s most popular floral chintz from the past 80 years and recolored, revamped and revived a collection of exclusive printed fabrics for today’s market.

The Cyrus Clark fabrics initially were introduced to the market in 1925 and designed and developed with British and French styling. The European designs were colored and priced specially for the American market. The current patterns remain consistent with Clark’s original goal of upper- end styling at a reasonable price, according to statement from Duralee.

CORRECTIONS AND CLARIFICATIONS

A photograph in the March 2005 Portfolio section incorrectly identifies the drapery hardware collection on page 43 as the Buckingham Collection from Kirsch. The photograph actually shows product from the Studio Coordinates collection. The photo caption should have read as follows:

"Kirsch's Studio Coordinates decorative traverse rod brings a soft feel to this room by contrasting with the modern bed design. Shown here is the Coronet finial design in a deep mahogany finish, available beginning March 1, when the program was re-introduced with new finial designs and updated finishes. Studio Coordinates is an ideal selection for bedrooms because its traversing feature makes opening and closing the window treatment effortless, while bringing a neat appearance to the window by keeping pleats uniform." We regret the effor.
