THE LIST

TOP 10 NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTIONS
You can start at any time to improve business.

OK, it’s February, but it’s not too late to make and keep a list of New Year’s Resolutions to improve business throughout 2005.

David Shepherd, David Shepherd & Associates, can help. He is author of “Your Business Or Your Life: 8 Steps For Getting All You Want Out of BOTH.” He has served in various faculty positions at the McCombs School of Business at the University of Texas at Austin. He’s also an entrepreneur having owned two businesses of his own, both professional service firms.

As a consultant, Shepherd also conducts workshops across the United States aimed at helping interior design professionals in business and strategic planning, leadership and communications (www.8steps.net). Here are some of his suggestions for improving your business.

10 New Year's Resolution

1. Raise prices. (Every penny of a price increase goes directly into your pocket!)
2. R & D is not just for big companies. (Spend four hours a month on such topics as technology, electronic notebooks, tablet PCs, Web-based accounting, project management, etc. You will be forced to ask a hundred times, “How might these improve my business model?”)
3. Identify your Dream Team of partners (and invite them to lunch. One per month.)
4. Create a Post-it Note business plan including in that small space: a five-year financial goal, strategy, three key success factors, core competency (the single thing at which you must excel) and projects/measures (how will you know if you’re on track?)
5. Contribute. (Give something back.)
6. Health and fitness. (Every minute invested here will return five-fold in terms of alertness and mental acuity.)
7. Invest in yourself and your employees.
8. Read outside your field. (You are part of a business, consider business magazines.)
9. Reward yourself. (When you complete a project give yourself a gift.)
10. Create a photo map. (It is well proven that linking emotional images of your dreams to your daily business routine will pay off in powerful ways!)
