Last month’s List (see D&WC, July 2004, page 14) ran down the Top 10 metropolitan areas in the United States for new, single-family housing permits. For the most part, housing permits were concentrated in warm-weather areas—Atlanta, Phoenix, Houston, San Bernardino, Orlando and Tampa were among the top 10.

You might expect those areas also to have the highest concentration of window treatment retailers, and for California, Florida and Texas you’d be right. However, the rest of this month’s List comes out of the Northeast and North Central states.

The Dept. of Commerce defines retail window treatment establishments as those
“primarily engaged in retailing new window treatments, such as curtains, drapes, blinds, and shades.” It’s likely many window coverings “retailers” slipped through the counting cracks.
